Reason Why Your Computer Is Running Slow
Imagine having your laptop for years, and it is giving super good performance without any problem working very fine and fast. All of a sudden it starts being very slow. Slow to the limit that you can’t even perform a basic task like launching an application.
All of a sudden it’s just very slow. You would be feeling so frustrated with your laptop or computer acting up so slow like that. I am going to list down all the possible reasons that cause this slow performance, freezing up of your laptop. This list might not cover up all the reasons but I hope you will find your reason here.
- It has been a long time that you are using your computer without rebooting it.
- There might be no enough free hard drive space.
- Your hard drive might be corrupted or fragmented.
- Virus or Malware may have infected your computer/laptop.
- There would be hardware problems or outdated drivers.
- Too many applications and programs would be running in the background.
- Overheating of computer/laptop or your processor.
- The version of the Windows OS you are using or other software installed are out of date.
- There might be a hardware failure.
- OR, the computer you are using is too old.
Solutions to the Slow Performance & Freezing up Of Laptop
There are several applications and programs which startup at the same time as your Windows does itself. Those items are in the system tray, they often launch at the startup of your Windows and then they keep processing the whole time you are using your computer.
Open the system tray by clicking the upwards arrow towards the right side of your taskbar. Check if there are any programs that you don’t want to process, right-click on them and terminate those programs with My computer is running slow.
Just similar to the programs in the system tray, there are other programs as well that automatically start processing on startup. These programs can also slow down your computer/laptop. Some of these programs are important and you would not want them to stop, such as your antivirus software, and some of them may be unnecessary for you.
You will have to open the Task Manager by clicking Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager or hit Ctrl-Shift-Escape to launch it. Select and go to the Startup tab and you will see each program, software that is running on startup, which will show the impact of those programs as well. How to increase the battery timing? Why does the laptop’s battery drain fast? Inspect all those programs and decide which programs you don’t want to run on the startup.
But note that the programs with Microsoft as their publisher are not to be terminated, which may result in a bad impact. Inspect and select the extra third-party applications and software and disable them by right-clicking on the program and then hit the DISABLE button.
It is said that you probably have to keep your software and Windows up to date, which is good for the security of your Windows and for the performance of your laptop. This saying is true in fact. By doing this you might help your computer/laptop for enhanced performance.
Windows always send you a notification automatically whenever there is an update available for the Windows, don’t always schedule it, download and install those updates as soon as possible. In case if you think that you have missed any Windows Update, then you can check for the update here.
Go to Start Menu, click Settings, and go to Updates & Security and then Windows Update. On the other hand, drivers, software and applications should be kept up to date as well. As I mentioned at the start of this paragraph that it is good for the security and performance of your laptop.
Deleting unnecessary files is a very important step to take. I will give you a general example of closets and drawers, more stuff in there, the more problem it creates.
Just like this, our computers get messy or you can say jumbled. You might not be able to see, but you know it is there and would be giving a negative bang on the performance of your computer/laptop. Make it a hobby, free up space by deleting files and folders on a daily basis or week by week, and do not forget to empty the recycle bin afterwards.
Sometimes, there is only one particular program that causes these issues all alone. The only way to find out that one program which is eating up all the power and resources of your computer/laptop is to go into the task manager and look for it. To open the Task Manager you will have to right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
Click on More details, to find out the program that is currently running on your computer/laptop with more information about them. In order to close something, right-click on that application and hit END TASK button.
Every Windows OS comes with several options for power plans. Those power plans are Power Saver, Balanced, and High Performance. In case if you think your laptop’s performance is low and the energy consumption is high, many people think a power saver is a good option for them. But I will give a big NO to that.
The power saver plan option is not a good idea as it decreases the performance of your laptop in order to save more energy. You should perhaps switch to the HIGH-PERFORMANCE power plan, as the name itself describes. This option power plan will surely enhance the performance of your laptop.
