Troubleshoot Your Printer Problems

Whether you are printing at home or in the office, it is inevitable that there will be problems in operating the device that can cost you time and money. The following tips will help you resolve some of your printer’s most common problems and malfunctions.

The Device does not print

There are many reasons why your printer is not printing. So start step by step with the basic controls to find out what’s gone wrong. First, check if there is an error message or warning light in the printer. Make sure there is paper in the feeder. Then check that the inks or toners are full. See if the USB cable is properly plugged into the respective ports or if the printer is connected via Wi-Fi.

Whether it is a network printer or a Wi-Fi Direct printer, try connecting it to your computer using a USB cable. It’s the simplest way to determine if the error is due to an unreliable wireless connection or something else.

Sometimes the reason a printer does not print is that you have installed software that includes a “virtual” printer that is set to default. Thus, each time you click ‘Print’, the document is saved as a file, rather than being sent to the physical printer for printing.

To check it out (in Windows 10), you’ll need to go to Settings> Devices> Printers and Scanners. Left-click the printer you want to set as the default. Click “Manage” and then “Set as default”. While you are there, you can also make sure the printer status is set to “Default”. If the situation is ‘offline’, this could be the cause of the problem.

Then make sure you have selected the correct printer in the program from which you are printing. For example, in a Word document, you can check this in the “Printer” field. Microsoft also has a handy printer troubleshooter that can help you troubleshoot. Click the “Resolve” button, download the file, run the program, and then follow the steps in the wizard. You can also use the troubleshooter in the “Printers and Scanners” section or the diagnostic tool that includes your printer setup.

Error message

There are a few possible reasons, but the most common is paper. The first thing to check is if there is a paper in the feeder. Then check to see if the paper is jammed. If this is the case, do not rush to pull the crumpled piece of paper through the printer. First, he removed the paper from the feeder, opened the printer cover, and checked the inside. Remember that the printing paper should be stored in a dry place, away from moisture. If you notice that each time you print two or more sheets is pulled together, this may be due to poor quality paper (eg it has absorbed moisture).

Unable to connect to Wi-Fi

In this case, too, you should start with the basic controls to find the cause of the problem more easily. However, here things are – usually – simpler. First, restart the printer and the computer. Restarting can help if the printer does not appear during installation.

Then check that the printer and wireless drivers are up-to-date. Otherwise, you will have to download the latest drivers and install them. If the problem persists, you may need to reset the connection options. This means that you have to delete the printer from the “Printers and Scanners” section, restart it, and then add it from scratch. In Windows 10, you can do this by going to Settings> Devices> Printers and Scanners> Adding a Printer or Scanner.

If the problem with these tips is not resolved then the error may be due to your router settings. In this case, you’ll need to use your printer manufacturer’s wireless setup wizard or the router’s WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) feature (if supported by your router). In the first case, you simply download the program and follow the on-screen instructions. As for the WPS solution, you simply press the relevant key on the router and then the corresponding one on your printer.

Poor print quality

In inkjet printers, this is usually because the nozzles have clogged the printheads, causing horizontal streaks and poor or incorrect colors. Cleaning the printheads can solve the problem. You can do this through the corresponding option in the printer maintenance program. Also, the quality of the ink cartridges or toner can affect print quality. For this reason, make sure to use inks and toners from reputable manufacturers.

If you are using a laser printer, this usually means that dirt has accumulated somewhere, usually on the imaging drum. Be very careful when cleaning the drum, using only isopropyl alcohol and a soft lint-free cloth. Read the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean the drum.

Unable to print via smartphone or tablet

To print from an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, your device must have Wi-Fi connectivity. It also supports the AirPrint protocol. The list of AirPrint-supported printers is growing, but there are still many printers, especially older models, that do not support it.

If your printer is connected to a Mac, you can print via AirPrint using HandyPrint software, which works well with many traditional printers, including Canon series, HP and some more. Also, Printer Pro is an application for iOS devices that allows you to print to many wireless printers or a wired printer connected to a PC or Mac.

Some Samsung smartphones, tablets and printers are designed to work together and printing is simple. Samsung also has its own application for printing on its printers, including iPhones.

You can use Google Cloud Print to print from any Android-powered smartphone or tablet to any printer connected to a computer.

Install Google Cloud Print on your mobile from the Google Play store. Then, using Google Chrome on your computer, go to Settings> Advanced and click Print. You can then add the printer that is connected to the computer. Then, by turning on your computer and printer, you will be able to print from your Android device.
